Library Books for Your Kobo Vox

We've had lots of questions here at the library about downloading eBooks from Library to Go to the new Kobo Vox. After lots of searching we've found an easy step-by-step guide from Kobo. You can check out the original entry here.

First, it's important to note that the Kobo Vox does not support Adobe Digital Editions, and that your best alternative is to use the Overdrive app.

To install the OverDrive app on your Kobo Vox:

1. Make sure you’re connected to a WiFi network

2. Tap the Home icon

3. Tap All Apps

4. Tap Browser

5. Navigate to http://www.overdrive.com/software/omc/

6. Find the section that states “If your device doesn’t support Android Market, you can download OverDrive Media Console for Android from OverDrive” and tap the link (just like the above picture.)

7. Agree to the terms

8. The download will start

9. After the download is complete open the notifications bar by dragging down from the top , or tap the Menu icon and tap Notifications

10. Tap on the Overdrive download (ODMediaConsoleSetup.apk) in order to install

11. Tap Install

12. Tap Open once the installation is complete

13. Tap Close in the About OverDrive Media Console window

14. OverDrive is installed in the All Apps section

Twilight Extravaganza

The teens had one awesome time today at the Twilight Extravaganza! They enjoyed tapped into their creative side by decorating and personalizing their own Journals, making their own Twilight themed T-Shirt transfers.

One activity that they all loved doing was making their own Vampire Glitter!

We also played some awesome games that we found on the internet. Twilight Jeopardy was hit, but Alice’s Visions was a bigger hit! (It’s played like Pictionary.) The girls loved trying to guess what the other was drawing so much, that our program actually ran 20 minutes over the time.

NFB Film Club

The NFB Film Club is back again this week with two more great films. Join us Saturday November 19 at 2:00pm for Uncommon Hero (short) and Prosecutor (documentary). Uncommon Hero is a short film that pays tribute to Paul Thompson, a man who has created a uniquely Canadian theatrical tradition through his passion, vision and tireless innovation. From Theatre Passe Muraille to the National Theatre School, Paul has mentored generations of actors and playwrights, forging a vibrant and distinctly Canadian theatre tradition. Prosecutor is a feature documentary that follows the Chief Prosecutor through the first trials of the newly formed International Criminal Court. Luis Moreno-Ocampo investigates and prosecutes some of the world's worst criminals for some of the world's worst crimes. He's a hero to genocide survivors, but has bitter enemies on both the Right and the Left. These two films are not to be missed. The NFB is a free event and everyone is welcome.

Community Spirit Program

Is your organization a registered nonprofit or charitable organization that is considering applying for a Community Spirit Program donation grant? Do you want to learn more about the charitable tax credit so you can promote it to your donors? Come into the library on Thursday November 17 at 3:00pm for Community Spirit Program. Twilight Extravaganza

Author Talk: Beth Wiseman, Author

The Brooks Public Library is now accepting resumes for a part-time Library Assistant position.

Duties include assisting patrons, processing books and materials at the circulation desk, shelving, general upkeep of the collection, and assisting with programming. Successful candidates must be motivated to provide excellent customer service, have good computer skills, be physically able to stand and walk for long periods, and lift or push moderately heavy items. Approximately 10-20 hours per week, evening and weekend work required.

Celebrate summer at the Brooks Public Library. Lively scenes of children playing in and around water are brought to mind with this year's Summer Reading Program theme: Splash! Celebrate Summer. In cooperation with the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and the Esplanade Arts and Heritage Centre in Medicine Hat, the Brooks Public Library is proud to present The Gallery, a series of rotating collections of art that will be displayed in the library and are available for public viewing. This month the Brooks Public Library is proud to present David Thompson - Highway. Named in honour of one of North America's great explorers and map maker, the David Thompson Highway (highway 11) stretches from just east of Red Deer, Alberta to the Icefields Parkway (Highway 93). Contributors to the David Thompson Highway exhibition are artists Margreet Beekman of Rimbey, Sandra Bingeman of Ponoka, Cindy Brown of Calgary, Colleen Mcginnis of Wetaskiwin, Dee Poisson of Didsbury, and Sonja Zacharias of Clive. The Gallery is open every day, so come in and check it out!

I'll let you in on a little secret - the Brooks Public Library and the Shortgrass Library System will once again will be offering a free language learning program through our databases called Mango Languages. Mango teaches practical conversation and cultural awareness for the world’s most popular languages.

In celebration of Mango, I wanted to share with you one of the coolest languages that you can learn from Mango: Pirate! Aye me hearties, you too can learn to parley with any and all the gentlemen o' fortune that you meet. (Note: "Gentlemen of Fortune" Pirate for "Pirate". Arr, isn't learning fun?)

Wii Game day continues on Thursdays from 3:30pm to 5:00pm until the end of June. Preteens and teens ages 7 to 18 are welcome to come in and see if they can beat the best! We supply snacks and drinks, so come out for some exciting gamer action!

Toddler Time and Story Time

At the library, we want to do what we can to encourage younger children to start enjoying books at an early age. On Mondays we begin our next sessions of Toddler Time and Story Time. It’s a great way to start younger children headed on a path towards reading. Toddler Time is for children ages 3 and under and runs from 10:15am to 11:00am. Story Time is for the children ages 4 to 6 and runs from 2:00pm to 2:45pm. Toddler Time and Story Time run in six week sessions at a cost of only $6 per child per session. The NFB Film Club features two great films this month about incredible personal journeys. Join us for an afternoon of Canadian films presented by the National Film Board of Canada on Saturday March 26th at 2:00pm. Come enjoy the short film, Wave a Red Flag. On her way to school, a teenage girl’s display of Native pride sparks a celebration of community and culture. Also showing is the documentary Racing Thoughts. This is a film about children who thought that they were ‘crazy’. Four young people living with mental illness and their loved ones make the courageous decision to open up about their stories. Their voices are complemented by that of the director, who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder as an adult and powerfully evokes the initial symptom which emerged in her childhood. Racing Thoughts skirts the specialists’ debates in favour of a more personal tone, moving away from the alarming vocabulary of diagnoses and allowing viewers to discover the children affected. A powerful story that is not to be missed, the NFB Film Club is open to everyone.

New in the Gallery this February is Remnants of Community. Pursuing a long-held dream, Calgary metal artist Simon Wroot embarked on an extensive tour of Alberta churches, and the result is this exhibition of fifteen artworks. Each piece is accompanied by its story; who created it, where and when, what denomination, what kind of life has it had, and where and what is it now. Simon’s miniature landscapes are created by tracing the various components of the scene on a computer, cutting these shapes with a jeweler’s saw from four different metals, and texturing the surface. The pieces are then pinned together in layers to create a low-relief view of the building and its surroundings, which is then mounted on a piece of slate. This exhibit will be up all month long so come check it out!

Are you on a board for a non-profit organization? Learn how to “Build a Better Board” at the library on Thursday January 20th at 12:00noon with a fantastic session via videoconference. An effective board, committed to a common vision and strategic leadership is perhaps the greatest asset of a non-profit organization. While dedicated, talented staff is critical, their time and energy is wasted without focus and policy direction. Recruiting, developing and retaining individuals to serve in board roles can be difficult and time consuming, but healthy organizations are willing to make a major investment of time and effort in these activities to build a strong organization. This session will include information on evaluating leadership needs, recruiting board members with necessary qualities and experience, developing board members to become effective leaders, and sustaining interest and commitment. Toddler Time and Story Time

Starting up again on Wednesday January 12 are our popular Toddler Time and Story Time programs for kids. Toddler Time and Story Time both introduce preschool children to a variety of stories, activities, and crafts. Toddler Time, for kids ages three and under, begins at 10:15am and Story Time, for children ages four to six, starts at 2:15pm. ESL Book Club

Book Club members will read books together and talk about their opinions to improve their reading and conversation skills. We are always happy to help show people everything we've got from the latest edition of The Canadian Writer's Market to monthly magazines like the Writer. But sometimes published authors are the best source for teaching you how to get your stories into bookstores.

On Saturday January 8 @ 1pm YA author Judith Graves will be joining us live via videoconference for a look at the dynamic world of young adult fiction, steps to publication and the life of a YA author. Residing in a northern Alberta community, similar to the fictional town of Redgrave, where Under My Skin, her debut novel, is set – Judith unhappily endures snow in the winter, and runs away from bees in the summer. A firm believer that Canadian teen fiction can be sexy, action packed and snarky as hell – Judith writes paranormal stories with attitude. If you’re writing fiction and want more information about the publishing industry, query process, etc…this is the session for you.

Paperbacks By Mail

The Brooks Public Library, in cooperation with the Shortgrass Library System, is pleased to offer 'Paperbacks by Mail'.

PBM is a service that sends library books out by mail. This service is generally used by people who are unable to use a public library or who live far from a public library.

Three times a year, a print catalouge is mailed out to program participants. You can choose up to six books at a time from the catalogue. These books are then mailed to you in a returnable mail bag, complete with a postage paid return label. This means that you never have to pay postage for returning your books recieved through the PBM program.

Interested in joining, or know someone who would like to? There are 3 easy ways to sign up for PBM:

1) If you already have a membership at a Shortgrass library
Call Larry Dye at 403-529-0550 and tell him that you want to join PBM.

2) If you don't have a current library card from a Shortgrass library, but you want one
Go to your local public library (for example, the Brooks Public Library) and register for a library card. Once you have a current membership, call Larry Dye at 403-529-0550 to join the PBM program.

3) I only want to join the PBM program and not get a library card
If you just want to join the PBM program, you must be a resident of one of the municipalities that supports the Shortgrass Library System (Bassano, Bow Island, Brooks, County of Forty Mile, County of Newell, Cypress County, Foremost, Medicine Hat, Rainier, Ralston, Redcliff, Rolling Hills, Rosemary, and Tilley)

If you live in one of the supporting municipalities, you may request an application form to join the program. Fill out the form and return it, along with a cheque payable to "Shortgrass Library System" for $10.00. Forms may be picked up from the Brooks Public Library, or may be mailed to you by calling Larry Dye at 403-529-0550.

The Brooks Public Library is proud to bring you two, high quality, videoconferences this September. The Definitely Not Plato Books Club is a book club unlike many others. Based in Lethbridge, members choose their favourite reads, present a list to the group who vote on which titles will be selected each month during the year. This month’s book is The Outlander by Gil Adamson. Set in 1903, the story focuses on Mary Boulton and her frightening journey across the Western Canada. Details of her past are slowly brought to light as she escapes into the mountains, struggling to put distance between herself and her two furious brothers seeking revenge for the death of one of their own. The Outlander is Canadian Gil Adamson’s first novel and was published in 2007 by Anasi. The Outlander was also the Brooks Public Library's Online Book Club fiction pick for Spring 2008. This book is currently available for check out from the Brooks Public Library, and everyone is welcome to attend this videoconference event.

Knowing which way to go to secure your financial future can be tough, especially when faced with saving for retirement or paying off current debts. That’s why you need to come to our next videoconference, So Which is Best? Pay Down your Mortgage or Invest,? on Thursday September 23rd at 12 Noon. Your hosts Kendra Jensen, Mortgage Specialist, and Joanne Metzger, Investment and Retirement Planner, will be your guides as they walk you through what to consider when you are deciding whether to pay down your mortgage or invest. This lunch hour session will give you lots of food for thought so you can make the decision that works best for you. Bring your questions as these ladies are also available to answer your toughest investment problems. This videoconference is hosted by the Lethbridge Public Library. Admission to this videoconference is free and drop ins are welcome.

September the Brooks Public Library is celebrating Alberta Arts Days. Created to showcase Alberta artists of all types, Alberta Arts Days encourage Albertans to discover, experience, and celebrate arts in their community. All month long the Brooks Public Library will be celebrating by holding talks and free workshops with local artists. On Thursday September 16th at 12:05 pm, local artist Richard Wood will be in the library to talk about acrylic and oil painting. Richard’s works have been featured in the Brooks Public Library Gallery, and his exhibit was one of our most popular exhibits of 2010. This session is a must for anyone who has ever thought about getting into painting. Everyone is welcome to attend this free session and drop ins are encouraged.

I know many people who love to scrapbook, and I enjoy going with them as they hunt for the perfect materials for their next masterpiece. It always seems that the biggest challenge for a scrapbooker is finding the right paper to work with. Here’s an idea – why not just make your own? The Brooks Public Library will be hosting a free Paper Making Workshop Saturday September 18th at 10:00am. Pre-registration is required, space for the class is limited, and all of the materials for the class are supplied. You can get in on the Alberta Arts Days celebrations in your own way. The Brooks Public Library has lots of books to help you out, from books that teach you how to find your inner guitar hero, to movies that teach you how to become a belly dancer. Come on in and take a look, or ask one of our friendly staff members for help on finding your new creative outlet.

The final days of August are always bittersweet for me, as I prepare to say goodbye to the lazy days of summer. I don’t know about you, but there just never seems to be enough warm sunny days for me to go outside, sit, and enjoy my latest library find.
Of course, the library keeps busy all year long with programs for everyone young and old. Returning next week on Wednesday September 1st are our ever popular Toddler Time and Story Time programs. Designed to introduce young children to the world of reading, Story Time is for kids aged four to six and Toddler Time is for parents and kids ages three years and under. Each week the children explore various themes through stories, songs, games, and crafts. These themes range from daily tasks that children experience every day, such as picking out clothing to wear, to characters from popular modern children’s books, such as Piggy and Elephant. Both Toddler Time and Story Time run for six weeks, and registration is only $6.00 per child. If you haven’t already, sign the kids up today and come experience the fun.

Every year in September Alberta observes and celebrates Alberta Arts Days. With back to school just around the corner you can expect the kids to be back on the internet this fall, researching projects and chatting with friends. But how do you keep your kids safe from the dangers that lurk on the World Wide Web? Join us on Thursday August 26th at 7:00 pm for ‘Surf Safe: Internet Safety for Your Whole Family’. This interactive videoconference will help you build an awareness of the risks online, and teach you how to make online experiences safer for yourself and your family. This is a free session and everyone is welcome to attend.

Pardon our dust! Construction of a new roof will be commencing soon at the Brooks Public Library. As many of you already know, part of the library’s roof was damaged by a falling tree after a violent micro burst back in August 2008. Other sections of the library have also experienced some water leakage near windows. That damage is due to the age of the roof and was not caused by the fallen tree. While all the books, magazines, and other materials within the library are intact, the City of Brooks felt it was best to replace the roof as quickly as possible. The library will be open during the construction period, which is scheduled to continue through to the end of September.

This week we say goodbye to our Summer Reading Program Coordinator, Crystal Skriver. Crystal was the creative genius behind all of our children’s programs this summer including Story Time, the Destination Jungle Summer Reading program, and Wii Game Day. While we are sad to see Crystal return to school at the University of Lethbridge, everyone at the library wishes Crystal the best in her future endeavours. Thanks for a great Summer Reading Program, Crystal!

Why is this your favorite book? The Lightening Thief is the best books I’ve read. It’s about a boy named Percy. He is a demigod - some who has one of their parents as Greek god, and the other as mortal. In the book, someone steals Zeus’ lightning bolt. The gods suspect it is Hades, so Percy must go on a quest to get the stolen bolt back.

Who would like this book? This book is really good for anyone who likes books about mythical creatures, or anyone with ADD or ADHD (Percy has both of these).

Return Your eBooks Early

Some of you have asked us "Can I return my eBooks and audiobooks from Library to Go before the expiry date?" While audiobooks currently cannot be returned to Library to go early, eBooks can be returned before the item due date. Here's how to do it:

1) Open Adobe Digital Editions.

2) Select the 'Library View' icon (in the upper left corner). The Adobe Digital Editions library is displayed.

3) Under the 'Bookshelves' heading, select 'Borrowed'.

4) Click the eBook you want to return.

5) Click the 'Item Options' arrow (in the upper left corner of the selected eBook).

6) Select 'Return Borrowed Item'.

7) Click 'Return' to verify that you want to return the title.

8) The eBook is returned to the library collection.

Starting today, you can borrow books from the Library anytime, anywhere - thanks to Library to Go. Downloadable eBooks and Audiobooks are now available online to everyone with a current library card and a computer with Internet access. Start by going to http://librarytogo.shortgrass.ca

From there you can browse a selection of over 500 new and recent titles in either eBooks and Audiobook format. (eBooks can be read on a computer or with specific eBook readers. Audiobooks can be listened to on an iPod, MP3 player or burned to compact discs.) Choose the books you want to read (or listen to), add them to your cart, then head to check out.

Choose either 7 or 14 days for your loan period, then download your books. At the end of your loan period your books automatically expire, which means never having to remember to return your items back to the library on time. (Hooray for no overdue fines!)

This new service is available to members in all of the Shortgrass Library System which include Medicine Hat, Brooks, Redcliff, Bow Island, Foremost, Bassano, Graham (Ralston), Tilley, Alcoma (Rainier), Rolling Hills, Rosemary, residents of Cypress County, Newell County and the County of Forty Mile.

Wireless Internet @ BPL

Hey guys, guess what? The Brooks Public Library is pleased to announce that we now offer wireless internet within the Library!

The Library is the few places in town where you can access wireless internet. All you need to do to use it is to bring in your laptop (or any other wireless device) and start up the internet. You will then be brought to the Brooks Public Library’s wireless access login screen.

Once here, all you need to access the wireless internet is your 14 digit library card number (found on the front of your library card) and your Personal Identification Number (PIN). If you don’t have either of these a Library Staff member can help you out.

'Thoughout the past five years, the Brooks Public Library Board has dealt with the many demands of a thriving multicultural community. The constant influx of new Canadians and those who speak English their second language have been supported by the public library with expanded hours, services and programs to meet their specific needs. They have also developed and increased the hours for early literacy programs, Seniors' Outreach programs, and have significantly upgraded the library's technology. The Brooks Public Library Board was nominated by the Staff at the Brooks Public Library as recognition of all the services that they perform for the Library and the community.'

Brooks Public Library has been "weeding" the collection and now we have lots of used books for sale! There are tons of paperbacks, non-fiction, large print, and teen books, too!

Paperbacks: $0.10 or by donation
Hardcovers: $0.25 or by donation

Resident Membership Fees Increase

Effective February 3, 2009, Resident Memberships for Brooks Public Library will increase:

Individual Resident Memberships - $15.00 per year
Family Resident Memberships - $20.00 per year

It is FREE to use anything in the library during opening hours from reading books to accessing computer services. Purchasing a membership allows library users to take books and other materials outside of the library and to access our online databases from home.

This is the first increase to Resident Membership fees since they were implemented in June 1996.

All fees collected are used to help maintain the cost of providing library services to our community.

Adopt-a-Magazine
Know a magazine lover? For $100, you can share his or her favorite magazine with the entire community! A plaque in their name can be posted acknowledging the donation.

Lois Hole Library Legacy Program
For the altruistic book lovers on your list, we can purchase a book in their name to be added to the library's collection. The book will include a book plaque in their honour on the inside cover.
